'winona' was written in 1991 by drop nineteens, who were paula kelley (vocals, guitar), motohiro yasue (guitar), unknown (drums), steve zimmerman (bass) and greg ackell (vocals and guitar). it appeared on the drop 19's album 'delaware'. special thanks to p.k for okay-ing the song, via robin and nick at ac30. 'winona' was published by unknown right now but we'll get it sorted.
these people played on our recording:
first bit: chris: guitar, bass; robert: guitar, drums. also: bryan from sinicure sang, as did naomi from jacob's (rest of name unknown,we'll get back to you on that). jamie from little moscow also sang in the end (or will do, anyway). the middle bit is: drums by robert, guitar by chris and robert, bass and keyboards by rick from little moscow. special thanks to gizmo who just happened to show up one day at the right time with a moothy in the right key (which is 'e', by the way). the end section incorporates the skills of mikey dean on turntablism and murray mackay did the studio tricks and editing / engineering on the whole thing (but especially the ending). murray and mikey go by the moniker 'jazz spastiks' and are also known as 'panda'. they also promote the drum n' bass / hip hop night 'alphabreaks'. check out the alphabreaks website for more on that (the link is in the links page). the very end was conceived and constructed by robert. katharine helped an awful lot and mick brennan was also very important in the whole deal as he runs the substation studio in rosyth, fife (where we did the recording, between feb and may 2005). this track is being released on the ac30 records compilation 'never lose that feeling 2', which is due out in jan 2006. 'never lose that feeling 1' is already available and you should check out the ac30 website for more stuff on that (see the links page for the link...)
and...... jamie came in and sang on the track last week, so thanks for that. ironically, while we were there bryan came in and we had to tell him that we were erasing his vocal. it's not that we didn't like it, we just wanted to try jamie's voice on the song. while we were mixing we put together another version, this time with everybody's vocal on it: the viet cong vocal orchestra is bryan, naomi, chris, katharine, robert and jamie. jamie's vocal version is being used on the comp cd, so we're not putting that version on here, you'll have to get the cd..... (sneaky). also, apologies for having to lose the ending on the final version, robin and nick asked us to shorten the song so they could fit it on the cd, so we're leaving a copy of the ending bit on here so you can listen to it.
winona finished version 1.0 is vocals by bryan and naomi.
winona take one is chris, robert and rick recording the take in the studio.
winona ending features 'panda': murray and mikey
vcvo: bryan, naomi, robert, katharine, chris and jamie.
thanks everyone for your help with the track, including alan who came in and played some sonic gtr for us as well.
